When the Leigh-on-sea Baptist Church decided on a major building project which involved the construction of a striking new entrance to the church, the architect for the project decided that a cupola would be the focal point above the entrance hall. This new cupola was originally designed to be clad in copper to complement the spire on the original building, but as the spire had suffered the theft of its copper in recent months, an alternative needed to be found.
The main contractor for the works, T.J.Evers Ltd, asked Mells Roofing Ltd to come up with a suitable material. We suggested Flag-Soprema and their copper impregnated PVC membrane, ‘Copper Art’, as the ideal solution. Mells Roofing Ltd and Flag-Soprema met with the architect and the main contractor and agreed upon the specification. The complex nature of the works required close cooperation with all parties working together. As a result the work was completed to the delight of all concerned.
The Baptist Church now has a fine copper-look Cupola which is safe from any future theft and will be a landmark for generations to come.
